Baleba to United for £70m: Smart Rebuild or Midfield Overkill?

Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to £70m to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, and with that one transfer their summer spending hits a staggering £153m. The question isn't whether United needed to spend. It's whether they've spent wisely.

Three Midfielders In, One Position Sorted

United moved fast this week. Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans came in from Aston Villa, and now Baleba completes a midfield overhaul that few saw coming in quite this shape. Casemiro is gone, and the club clearly decided that one or two additions wouldn't be enough. They've gone all in on rebuilding the engine room from scratch.

At 22, Baleba is the youngest and arguably the most exciting of the three arrivals. He joined Brighton from Lille back in 2023 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League's most dynamic midfielders when fit. He's athletic, aggressive in the press, and comfortable receiving the ball under pressure. For Michael Carrick, who will want his team to have energy and intensity through the middle, Baleba fits the profile well.

The fact that Baleba was eager to make the move north is telling. Players don't always push for United right now. That enthusiasm should count for something.

The £70m Gamble and the Injury Cloud

Let's be honest about the risk here. Baleba is currently sidelined with an ankle injury picked up in pre-season, and United are paying £65m upfront with a further £5m in add-ons. Brighton also kept a sell-on clause, which tells you something about how they view his long-term value.

Paying that kind of money for a player who can't go straight into the squad is a leap of faith. United won't be able to use him immediately, and with Premier League fixtures piling up from the off, Carrick's hand will be forced in the short term. Kobbie Mainoo starts at Hull on Saturday, but the depth behind him is still being tested.

From a betting perspective, this complicates any early-season markets around United's consistency. They've built a bigger, more competitive squad on paper, but with Baleba unavailable at the start and Ugarte also ruled out after a serious knee injury on international duty, there's a period where the midfield could still look thin in terms of proven Premier League minutes.

The Left-Back Question Lurking in the Background

One subplot worth watching is whether Baleba ends up anywhere near a full-back role. He's left-footed and has played there before, and with Luke Shaw's injury record being what it is, United might lean on that flexibility sooner than expected. Dalot and Mazraoui have both filled in on the left, but neither is a natural there.

Carrick may prefer to keep Baleba central and look elsewhere for left-back cover, but the fact that the club are still weighing it up tells you the squad planning isn't fully finished. If United don't bring in a specialist left-back before the window closes, that position could be a weak point worth targeting in team-specific betting markets, especially in big away games where they'll be pressed high.

United have spent £153m this summer and the rebuild feels real. Tielemans brings experience and range, Santos offers energy and potential, and Baleba, once fit, could be the most impactful of the three in the long run. The spine of Carrick's midfield looks more competitive than it has in years.

For Premier League betting purposes, we'd be cautious about backing United heavily in the opening weeks while Baleba sits in the treatment room.
