Premier League 2026-27 Title Race: Why Arsenal Are Nailed-On Favourites But Three Teams Could Spoil the Party
Real Madrid loanee scores first career hat-trick in stunning Lyon debut
Arsenal are champions. And almost everyone thinks they're about to do it again.
With 25 of 28 expert predictions backing them to retain the Premier League title in 2026-27, the Gunners aren't just favourites on paper, they're the closest thing to a banker you'll find at this stage of any season. But banking on the obvious isn't always where the value lies in football betting, and the Premier League has a long history of punishing complacency.
So let's break down what the title race actually looks like, who the realistic challengers are, and where we think the smart money should go.
Arteta Has Built Something Rare
Continuity wins titles. It's one of the most underrated factors in football, and Arsenal have it in abundance.
Mikel Arteta has kept his core together, added genuine quality in midfield with Bruno Guimaraes alongside Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi, and his squad now has the depth to fight on multiple fronts. The partnership has been building for six years and last season it delivered an 85-point title-winning campaign, finishing seven points clear.
When a manager doesn't need to spend pre-season explaining his methods, that's a massive head start. Arteta's players know the system, trust it, and believe in it. That collective confidence is worth more than any single signing.
The one genuine worry is up front. A top striker, potentially Victor Osimhen, could be the difference between a comfortable title defence and a potential wobble in Europe. William Saliba's World Cup injury recovery is also worth monitoring. Those are the two soft spots in an otherwise formidable setup.
For outright Premier League betting, Arsenal are the correct selection. We won't pretend otherwise. The question is whether you can find value somewhere else.
City's New Era and Why Maresca Has It Tough
Manchester City lost Pep Guardiola, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, John Stones and others who were the foundation of a dynasty. What remains is still a world-class squad by most standards, but world-class squads still need organisation, identity and trust in their manager.
Enzo Maresca is a smart coach who showed real quality at Leicester and Chelsea, but inheriting a dressing room this big, this experienced, and this used to winning on its own terms is a different challenge entirely. His style leaves teams open defensively, and in a season where Haaland will carry enormous attacking responsibility, City could be unpredictable.
Our view is that City finish second but are worth backing at any enhanced odds for top-four rather than title. They won't be as bad as their Community Shield performance suggested, but they won't be as dominant as the Guardiola years either. There's a version of this season where they're brilliant and there's a version where they're chaotic. Backing them each way at decent odds makes sense.
Chelsea Are the Wildcard and Spurs Are Still Spurs
Xabi Alonso walking into Stamford Bridge is one of the most fascinating managerial appointments in recent Premier League history. He's coming in with something to prove after Real Madrid, and he's brought in the kind of experienced heads, think Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, who can actually hold that dressing room together.
The Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers combination as dual number 10s is genuinely exciting. No European football this season means more time on the training pitch and a squad focused entirely on domestic competition. Chelsea could absolutely push for second.
For betting purposes, Chelsea for top four at a generous price is one we'd take seriously. If Palmer stays fit and Alonso finds his system quickly, they could be right in the mix from October onwards.
Tottenham are a different story. De Zerbi has made signings and Maddison is back, but this is a club asking us to trust them again after finishing in the bottom half. There's a case for them sneaking into the top six, but top four feels ambitious. The value isn't there at short prices.
Our Premier League Prediction and Betting Take
The Premier League title race in 2026-27 shapes up like this in our view: Arsenal win it, City finish second, and Chelsea and Liverpool complete the top four, with United knocking on the door again but ultimately falling short.
For outright bets, Arsenal are correct but short. The real value plays are Chelsea for top four, City each-way for the title at any price above 4/1, and Liverpool to finish top four given they have Wirtz, Isak, and an exciting new manager in Andoni Iraola who plays the kind of high-energy football that suits their squad.
If you're building an accumulator around the Premier League this season, assume Arsenal win most weeks. Plan around it, not against it.
