The transfer window has slammed shut, but the business isn't done. A stack of high-profile players are still available on free transfers, and for clubs and bettors alike, that market is wide open. Some of these names represent genuine value. Others are cautionary tales dressed up in famous shirts.

We've gone through the full list and picked out the storylines worth watching, the moves most likely to happen, and the ones where the odds probably flatter the player more than the reality does.

The Vardy Situation Is the Most Watchable Story in the Lower Leagues

Jamie Vardy at 39 should probably be winding down. Instead, he's got three English clubs reportedly circling him after a stint in Italy with Cremonese ended when they dropped to Serie B. Wrexham, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham are the names being thrown around, and if you're looking for a free agent signing bet worth placing, Vardy to a Premier League or Championship club before the end of the year looks genuinely live.

West Ham is the wildcard here. A forward who scores goals at any level and brings a crowd off their seat, even at the tail end of his career, fits a club needing momentum. Sheffield Wednesday makes sense on pure footballing grounds. Wrexham is the Hollywood option and, frankly, very on brand for them.

Pogba and Sterling Represent Everything That Can Go Wrong

These two tell very different stories but share the same ending for now: unemployed and uncertain.

Pogba is 33 and has barely played since a doping ban wrecked the best part of two years of his career. Monaco gave him a lifeline last summer and terminated his deal early. Six appearances. That's the return on one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation. We don't see a Premier League club touching him, and his market value in betting terms is basically zero until he strings together consistent minutes somewhere.

Sterling's situation is arguably sadder. Released by Feyenoord after three months and eight games, facing a court appearance for dangerous driving, and described by sources as having been through an extremely tough couple of years. He's 31 and still has the raw ability, but no top club is going to take that risk right now. A move to the MLS or a mid-table European side feels more realistic than anything in England.

Carvajal and Alaba Are the Real Puzzles

Two Real Madrid defenders, both free agents, both without a club. That shouldn't be possible at this level of quality.

Dani Carvajal made 451 appearances for Real across 13 years. He's widely considered one of the finest right-backs of his era. The fact that he's been training at Spanish Football Federation facilities with fellow free agent Joselu rather than signing for someone suggests either he's being very selective or the offers haven't matched his expectations yet.

Alaba is the same story. Manchester United were briefly the bookmakers' favourite to sign him and then nothing. For a player with 12 league titles and four Champions Leagues on his CV, still only 34, the silence is genuinely surprising. If either of these two shows up at a club before Christmas, it'll be a significant coup. Both feel like unresolved bets with decent implied odds on something happening.

The Ones Already Moving On

Sancho to Palmeiras looks close to done and, in honesty, it might be the fresh start he actually needs. The Premier League chapters at United and Chelsea didn't work, and a move to Brazil at 26 could resurrect his confidence before anyone tries him in Europe again.

Mahrez looks set to stay in Saudi Arabia with Al-Shabab reportedly close. That tracks. He's carved out a life there and at 35 with 37 goals for Al Ahli it's not like he failed.
