Hull vs Manchester United Sets the Tone for a Stretched Season

This is the fixture we find most interesting from a Premier League betting perspective this weekend. Hull are a newly promoted side who, by all accounts, will be defensively stubborn and hard to break down. Their route to the Premier League was remarkable and they won't just roll over at home in front of their own fans on day one. Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, finished third last season but they now carry the extra weight of Champions League football. Youri Tielemans is a solid addition but the squad depth is being tested already. We think United win this, but not comfortably. A 1-2 scoreline feels right. The Two Games We'd Avoid on the Coupon

Sunderland vs Ipswich and Nottingham Forest vs Leeds are both fixtures we're leaving alone. Both games feature two teams at uncertain points in their development, both involve significant squad changes over the summer, and both could genuinely go any way. Ipswich have added some exciting players, Daizen Maeda chief among them, and the atmosphere at Portman Road will be electric. But new signings don't always click immediately and Sunderland have Granit Xhaka pulling strings in midfield and genuine firepower up front. These are exactly the games that kill accumulators. If you want to include one of them, Sunderland away might offer value as a short-priced favourite, but we wouldn't build around either of these fixtures.

Our Best Bet of the Weekend

Newcastle vs Liverpool is the standout game from a value perspective. Newcastle have lost Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes from their midfield, both of whom gave them real control in the centre of the pitch. Anthony Gordon has gone too. Liverpool, meanwhile, have Alexander Isak leading the line and Florian Wirtz potentially making his Premier League debut. Andoni Iraola has had a full pre-season to embed his ideas and Liverpool's attacking options look genuinely frightening this year. The mood at St James' Park may not be what it once was given the squad has been dismantled, and a quieter home crowd could actually make this easier for Liverpool. We're backing Liverpool to win this one at whatever price the market offers. If Isak hits the ground running against his former club, this could be a statement result.

The Premier League is wide open again this season and the opening weekend rarely gives clean answers. Back the big ones with handicaps, avoid the coin-flip fixtures and look for the games where one side is clearly in better shape than the other. That's where the value lives in gameweek one.
