Chalobah Heads to Como, But Chelsea’s Defensive Overhaul Is Far From Over

Chelsea have finally moved Trevoh Chalobah on, agreeing a deal worth up to £31m with Serie A side Como. It's a tidy bit of business, but it barely scratches the surface of the squad surgery Xabi Alonso needs to carry out at Stamford Bridge this summer.

A Clean Break After Twenty Years

Chalobah leaving Chelsea feels like the end of a long, complicated chapter. He came through the academy as a child, spent years being loaned out across Europe, finally broke into the first team, and then found himself stuck in a squad so bloated that even decent performances couldn't guarantee him a regular starting spot.

At 27, moving to Como makes sense for him. Cesc Fabregas has been chasing this deal for over six months, which tells you how much he rates the player. Como qualified for the Champions League last season by finishing fourth in Serie A, so this isn't a step down in ambition. Chalobah gets a leadership role, a long-term contract, and a genuine chance to matter at a club that's genuinely going places.

Chelsea get back around £25.7m upfront with a further £5.1m in add-ons. Given Chalobah wasn't part of Alonso's plans and was eating into the wage bill, that's a decent return.

Nine Centre-Backs Is Not a Squad, It's a Crisis

Here's the real story. Even after selling Chalobah, Chelsea still have nine senior centre-backs on their books. Nine. That's not depth, that's chaos.

Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana are presumably at the top of Alonso's pecking order. Tosin Adarabioyo is solid enough. The club just spent £52m on Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace. But then you've got Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, Aaron Anselmino, Mamadou Sarr, and Josh Acheampong all still on the books too.

Chelsea are actively trying to move Disasi and Badiashile on, and younger options like Sarr and Acheampong could head out on loan, possibly to Premier League clubs. Even if all four of those moves happen, that still leaves five or six centre-backs competing for two or three spots. It's genuinely difficult to build a coherent defensive unit when the positions feel like a revolving door.

Alonso will need that clarity at the back if Chelsea are going to challenge for the top four this season. A settled defensive partnership is the foundation everything else gets built on.

What This Means for the Betting Markets

From a Chelsea betting perspective, this summer is still very much a work in progress. The Chalobah sale is a positive step in terms of squad management, but the overall picture at Stamford Bridge still looks cluttered heading into pre-season.

For those looking at Chelsea's outright Premier League odds or their top-four finish prices, the key question isn't really about one defender leaving. It's about whether Alonso can get enough of the deadwood out, bring in the right players for his system, and build genuine cohesion quickly enough to hit the ground running.

With Lacroix already in and Chalobah out, the direction of travel is right. But with so many bodies still needing to move on, Chelsea's window is far from done. Their odds may shift considerably before a ball is kicked in anger, especially if Disasi and Badiashile find clubs soon and the squad starts to look leaner.

We'd hold off on locking in any Chelsea futures bets until the squad picture is clearer. The bones of a good team are there under Alonso, but right now it still looks like a building site.

Patience is the word with Chelsea this summer, and that goes for punters as much as it does for the manager.
