Savio to Spurs: Why £75m Could Be the Smartest Bet in the Premier League This Season

Tottenham have spent big this summer. Really big. But of all the names through the door at Spurs this window, Savio might be the one who changes everything.

The 22-year-old Brazil winger has arrived from Manchester City for an initial £75m, with a further £10m in add-ons possible. That's a serious outlay. And yet when you dig into the numbers, the case for the fee makes a lot of sense.

The Stats Behind the Price Tag

City didn't play him enough last season. That much is obvious. Savio featured in just 31% of City's available minutes across all competitions in 2024-25, down from 54% the season before. But here's the thing, in the minutes he did play, he was exceptional.

Despite managing only 1,773 Premier League minutes, he recorded eight open-play assists. Only five players in the division did more from open play. On a per-90 basis, he ranked third for open-play assists across the entire Premier League. Only Mohamed Salah created more chances per 90 than Savio's 2.2. Let that sink in for a moment.

His carrying ability is just as impressive. Among players with at least 1,000 Premier League minutes in 2024-25, only Jeremy Doku averaged more progressive carries per 90 than Savio's 6.8. He also led the division for carries that directly led to a chance created, averaging 1.3 per 90. These aren't the numbers of a squad player. These are the numbers of a difference-maker who was being underused.

What De Zerbi Gets That Guardiola Didn't Use

Roberto de Zerbi's system is built on wide creativity. He loves wingers who carry the ball, draw defenders and then release teammates at the right moment. At Brighton he transformed players like Solly March and Kaoru Mitoma into Premier League threats. Savio fits that model perfectly.

The winger's numbers from his loan spell at Girona in 2023-24 gave the clearest sign of what he can do with consistent game time. He played nearly 3,000 La Liga minutes, scored nine goals, laid on eight assists and established himself as one of the most dangerous one-v-one players in Spain. That version of Savio, given a full season under a coach who genuinely wants him, is a scary prospect for Premier League defenders.

De Zerbi called him a player with 'energy, imagination and quality in wide positions' and said he has 'the courage to attack defenders.' That's not manager-speak. That's a coach describing exactly the type of player his system demands.

What It Means for Spurs' Betting Odds

This is where the real conversation starts for anyone putting money on Tottenham this season.

Spurs have now spent over £312m in this window alone, bringing in Savio, Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka. They're also in advanced talks for Omar Marmoush from City. This is not a squad being patched together. This is genuine investment in a De Zerbi project.

For us, the most interesting Premier League betting angle right now is Spurs for a top-four finish. They've got a manager with a clear identity, a squad being built in his image and now a winger who can unlock defences at the highest level. If Savio stays fit and De Zerbi gets a full pre-season with this group, a Champions League push is not a stretch.

Savio himself is worth tracking in the assists market too. His per-90 assist rate last season was elite, and now he'll be playing regular football with a manager who will use him every week. Double-digit assists in a full Premier League season is a realistic target.
