Blackjack Guide and Basic Strategy Chart for Malaysian Players

Blackjack's cost depends on two things: the table's rules and your decisions. Played by the chart below, a standard 3:2 table costs about 0.43% of your initial bets; a 6:5 table costs more than four times that. Neither figure predicts a session. The maths is from published analysis (sources at the end); we have not played at the tables discussed.

How Blackjack Works

The object is not to get as close to 21 as possible. The object is to beat the dealer’s hand without going over 21.

Cards score at face value; picture cards (J, Q, K) count 10; an Ace counts 1 or 11, whichever helps you. An Ace plus any 10-value card on your original, unsplit two-card hand is a blackjack (a “natural”) and normally pays 3:2 — RM15 profit on a RM10 bet.

At a conventional dealer-hole-card table, a hand plays out like this:

1. You place your bet inside the table’s minimum and maximum.
2. You receive two cards face-up. The dealer takes two — one face-up (the upcard), one face-down (the hole card).
3. If the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, you are offered insurance. (Decline it. See below.)
4. You act on your hand. Your options are hit (take a card), stand (take none), double (double the bet, take exactly one more card), split (with a pair, put up a second bet and play two hands), and at some tables surrender (give up half the bet and end the hand).
5. The dealer reveals the hole card and draws to 16, standing on 17. At some tables the dealer also hits a soft 17, which costs you more (see the table below).
6. If you bust, your hand loses immediately, even if the dealer later busts. If the dealer busts, everyone still in wins. Otherwise the higher total wins. Equal ordinary totals push (seri): you get your stake back. A natural blackjack beats a 21 made with more cards or after a split; two naturals push.

A “hard” hand has no Ace, or has an Ace forced to count as 1. A “soft” hand contains an Ace still able to count as 11 — soft hands cannot bust on the next card, which is why they are played more aggressively.

Read the Table Rules Before Using an Edge Figure

The Wizard of Odds gives a 0.43% house edge with basic strategy for its reference game: eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17 and checks for blackjack, double on any first two cards and after splits, splits to four hands, one card to each split Ace, 3:2 blackjack. It is an example, not a figure for every online table.

Its rule comparisons give these approximate changes in percentage points, each a single change from that game (several changes need not add up exactly). Cost = edge × RM10,000, the initial bets on 1,000 RM10 hands.

The 6:5 payout is the costliest rule here: RM182 against RM43, on a table that looks the same. The edge uses the initial bet and already includes doubles and splits, so do not add those stakes again. Results can be much better or worse; our RTP and house-edge glossary explains expected return.

Questions to Check in the Game Rules

• Does a natural pay 3:2 or 6:5? At RM10, these pay RM15 or RM12 profit respectively.
• Does the dealer stand on soft 17 (S17) or hit it (H17)?
• How many decks are used, and when are they shuffled?
• Which hands can double? Is doubling after splitting allowed?
• How many splits are allowed, and can split Aces draw more than one card?
• Is late surrender available, and does the dealer check for blackjack before extra bets are made?

If a table does not publish these rules, no edge figure applies to it; the same goes for unstated bonus conditions (see our bonus terms glossary).

The Basic Strategy Chart

Basic strategy picks the play with the best expected result for your hand against the dealer's upcard, under stated rules. It lowers the edge; it does not remove it. In the Wizard of Odds' reference model, “never hit hard 12 or more” has a 3.91% edge and copying the dealer (no doubles or splits) 5.48%, against 0.43% by the chart.

Chart scope: 4–8 decks, dealer stands on soft 17, doubling on any first two cards and after splitting allowed, conventional 3:2 blackjack. Use it where the dealer checks an Ace or ten-value upcard for blackjack before your double/split decisions, or equivalent protection of extra bets applies. Do not use it unchanged for a no-hole-card game that takes all extra stakes on dealer blackjack.

Apply the late-surrender rule below first if available, then the pair chart, then the soft or hard total chart. Splitting and doubling apply only when the rules permit them. After a split, use the resulting hand's chart, subject to restrictions such as one card only to a split Ace.

Key: H = hit; S = stand; D = double, otherwise hit (except soft 18, where the fallback is stand); SP = split. A = Ace; 10 includes picture cards.

Hard Totals

Soft Totals (Hands Containing an Ace Counted as 11)

Soft 18 is not an automatic stand: under these rules it hits against a dealer 9, 10 or Ace.

Pairs

Always split Aces and 8s; never split 5s or 10s. These pair decisions assume S17 and doubling after splitting. Without doubling after a split, split 2s and 3s only against 4–7, 6s only against 3–6, and do not split 4s. If splitting is unavailable, use the appropriate hard or soft total.

If Your Table Offers Late Surrender

For the S17 rules above, surrender an initial hard 16 against 9, 10 or Ace, except a pair of 8s, which is split. Surrender hard 15 against 10. These are late-surrender decisions after the dealer has checked for blackjack, not early-surrender rules.

If the dealer hits soft 17: the source chart also doubles 11 against Ace, A–7 against 2 and A–8 against 6. When doubling is unavailable, hit 11 and stand on the two soft hands. With late surrender, it also surrenders 15, a pair of 8s and hard 17 against Ace. Other rule changes can require further adjustments; use the matching source chart.

Insurance, Betting Systems and Card Composition

Insurance is a separate bet that pays 2:1 when the dealer has blackjack. Basic strategy declines it, including when you hold a natural. An illustrative eight-deck calculation looking only at the dealer's Ace leaves 128 ten-value cards among 415 cards: 3 × 128/415 − 1 gives a player return of −7.47% per insurance stake (−7.40% with six decks: 3 × 96/311 − 1). Exposed cards shift the exact figure in a given hand.

A losing streak does not make a win due. Dealt cards do change a shoe, which is what card counting tracks, but card counting does not work where seen cards are shuffled back before they matter: RNG blackjack that reshuffles after every hand, or a live shoe with a continuous shuffler. Elsewhere the shuffle point decides, and we have not verified it for any online table.

Martingale and other progressions do not remove the edge; they raise the money exposed until a bankroll or table limit stops them. See our baccarat strategy guide.

Side bets have their own rules and paytables. Many published examples cost more than the main game, but a name such as Perfect Pairs does not establish one universal edge. Check the exact version before using a quoted percentage.

Blackjack and Bonus Wagering

Check whether the promotion permits blackjack and how much each wager contributes; a low game edge alone does not make a bonus useful. Two ranked casinos' terms, read 12 October 2026:

• Dafabet's casino welcome (30× wagering, RM82 maximum bonus bet) counts blackjack at 20% against 100% for slots, so each RM100 blackjack bet adds RM20 of progress.
• BK8's welcome terms say turnover on non-live table games, naming blackjack, does not count "unless SPECIFICALLY stated"; its live-casino welcome is 50% up to MYR 300 at 25× deposit plus bonus.

Legal and Scam Information

Playing can be an offence for you. Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and section 6(1) of the Betting Act 1953 penalise players: a fine up to RM5,000, up to six months' jail, or both. In October 2023 the Court of Appeal upheld convictions for online gambling on laptops (Bernama). An offshore licence is not a Malaysian one.

If money has gone to an account you now believe is fraudulent, call your bank and the NSRC on 997 immediately, then lodge a police report anyway: a 997 call does not replace it, and the NFCC's NSRC page asks for the report within 24 hours. Official listings differ on 997's hours (NFCC: 8am to 8pm; malaysia.gov.my: 24 hours), so use your bank's 24-hour line if you cannot get through. Recovery is not guaranteed. PDRM's Semak Mule checks payee accounts; no match does not prove safety.

Keep Spending Limits Separate from Strategy

A low theoretical edge cannot predict a session's result. Set an affordable spending limit, do not borrow to gamble or chase losses, and stop if gambling becomes difficult to control.
