Premier League Power Rankings After Five Games: Who’s Flying, Who’s Flailing

Five games in and the Premier League is already throwing up storylines we didn't see coming. The international break gives us the perfect moment to stop, breathe, and work out who's genuinely got something going on and who's already running out of excuses.

We've gone through every club and given our honest take. No sugarcoating.

The Early Pacesetters Worth Backing

Manchester City and Brighton are the two names sitting at the top of our list, and for very different reasons.

City have won all five. That includes a win at Old Trafford with ten men. Erling Haaland is already leading the scoring charts and Pep Guardiola's side look ominously smooth. If you're building an accumulator around a Premier League title favourite, nothing has changed. City are still the team everyone else has to beat.

Brighton are the story of the opening weeks. Sixteen goals in five games is extraordinary. They put three past Arsenal, which is not something many sides manage in a full season. Whether Fabian Hurzeler's side can sustain this level is the real question, but right now they're the most fun team in the division and genuinely dangerous against anyone.

Brentford deserve a mention here too. Eight points, unbeaten, demolished both Spurs and Chelsea without breaking a sweat. Europe is not an unrealistic conversation to be having about them right now.

The Surprises That Change the Betting Landscape

Hull City in the Championship are sitting on eight points from their opening five. They've beaten Manchester United and picked up draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea. That's not a fluke, that's a team who know exactly what they're doing.

Leeds United are fifth, unbeaten, with one of the best defensive records in the second tier. That 4-1 win over Newcastle was a statement. They're quietly building something.

In the Premier League, Everton deserve credit. David Moyes has made them genuinely difficult to break down despite a transfer window that gave him very little to work with. They're not flashy, but they're competitive, and in a division this tight, that matters.

The Big Names Who Owe Us an Explanation

Tottenham are the worst story of the season so far. Over three hundred million pounds spent in the summer and they failed to score in their opening four Premier League matches. Four. That's not a slow start, that's a crisis hiding behind expensive signings. Their rating of two out of ten is generous. Spurs fans won't disagree.

Manchester United sit at four. Their only win came against Ipswich, they lost at Hull, and they could only draw with a Fulham side who were bottom of the table at the time. That result alone tells you everything. The rebuild under whatever structure is currently in place at Old Trafford is nowhere near complete.

Arsenal started their title defence solidly enough and then got torn apart by Brighton. A seven feels right, because the ceiling is still there, but the Brighton collapse exposed something fragile in their game that opponents will have noted.

Chelsea under Xabi Alonso had some positive early signs, but losing two of their last three and getting picked apart by Brentford raises real questions. A six feels fair, but the trajectory is the wrong way.

Our Call on Where This Is All Heading

City win the Premier League. That's our position and five games have done nothing to shake it. Haaland in form, squad depth unmatched, and they're already winning ugly when they need to.

Brighton are the team we'd most want in our corner for a cup run or a results accumulator over the next month. Their form is electric and their schedule doesn't look brutal coming out of the break.

In the Championship, Hull's start deserves serious respect from a betting angle. At the prices available on promoted clubs, anyone who backed them to make noise early has been rewarded. Leeds are worth watching too.

The Premier League resumes on 10 October and the storylines are already set. Spurs need a response or the pressure becomes unbearable. City need no motivation because they never do. And Brighton just need to keep doing exactly what they're doing.

Five games tells us a lot more than people give it credit for.
