The manager was unusually direct about it. He pointed out that only Chermiti, among his attacking options, can create something from nothing. Shankland, Miovski and Nadiri all need service. Ryan, Lawrence and Bojan are the same. So if Rangers cannot get the ball into dangerous areas, those strikers become passengers. That's the creativity issue in plain terms.

Defensively, the picture is just as tight. With Ross McCrorie nursing a knee issue and only five senior defenders fully fit heading into a run of four games in 12 days, the squad depth just isn't there yet. McInnes knows it, and that's why a winger and a defender are his stated priorities before the weekend.

The Raskin Situation Is the Subplot Worth Watching

Nicolas Raskin won't be involved at Dundee United. He's only back from his post-World Cup break this week, which rules him out of Friday's game. But the bigger story here isn't his fitness, it's his future.

McInnes called him a 'flight risk' after the World Cup, and Rangers have already signed three defensive midfielders this summer in preparation for losing him. That's pretty telling. When a club pre-emptively replaces a player before he's even asked to leave, they're expecting the call to come. Whether Raskin stays or goes will shape how Rangers look in the middle of the park for the rest of the window.

Rangers have the better squad on paper, and McInnes has shown he can organise a solid defensive shape. But without a genuine difference-maker wide, we're looking at a Rangers side that could dominate possession and still struggle to break a low block.

A draw would not shock us at all. Rangers at short odds for a straightforward win feels like a market that's pricing in the club name more than the current squad situation.
